About the Belleville High School
Distinguished Graduate Program

Selection Committee

The search for BHS graduates who serve as working role models to today's youth is an exciting mission. The Selection Committee is composed of representatives from civic and service organizations, government, and alumni organizations who review nominations and choose candidates for the Distinguished Graduate Award.

1. The selection committee will ensure that the nomination procedure was followed and the nominees meet the nomination criteria.
2. The nominee's accomplishments shall be evaluated by a selection committee appointed by the Distinguished Graduate Steering Committee members.
3. Up to 5 honorees per year may be selected.
4. All nominees not selected will be considered for a period of three succeeding years.
5. Awards and recognition will be presented by the VBPS Board of Education every Spring.

Recognition is Significant

In response to community interest, and a desire on the part of the current administration to recognize the honorable and worthy graduates of Belleville High School who have brought distinction to this community, the Distinguished Graduate Program was enacted by the Van Buren Public Schools Board of Education on Monday, September 8, 1997.

Superintendent Jim Richendollar requested the gathering of a group of community members to work with school personnel to direct The Distinguished Graduate Program as a Steering Committee.

The Distinguished Graduate Program Steering Committee created a nomination process, as well as a Selection Committee to determine from nominations those who will be named distinguished graduates on an annual basis.

The Mission is clear - to recognize graduates from Belleville High School who have distinguished themselves in their professions or businesses, demonstrated exemplary citizenship, or made significant contributions to society, and who serve to inspire today's students as examples of the success possible as BHS graduates.

The Mission is Challenging...

We all know we have many great BHS Graduates who deserve to be nominated. The selection process, which limits the selection of candidates to just five recipients every year, is a very difficult task.

Membership on the Selection Committee will rotate annually among representatives from civic and government groups, chaired by the Belleville High School Principal. The decisions of the selection committee are final.
