Van Buren Public Schools Gifted Program

The Van Buren Gifted and Talented Program serves students in grades kindergarten through eighth. The program is designed for academically gifted and highly motivated students. There is an accelerated level of academic work, and the instructional pace is more rapid than in general education classes. The Gifted and Talented Program stresses a combination of acceleration and enrichment. Because the students learn more quickly, there are many opportunities to delve more deeply into subject matter.

The elementary classrooms are located at Tyler School. This magnet program allows the student to attend a full day of gifted instruction for all academic subjects. The middle school gifted curriculum at North Middle School consists of three subjects in sixth grade:  English, Social Studies, and Enrichment, a research studies class. Seventh and eighth grade students have two Gifted and Talented classes:  English and Social Studies. In addition, the students at North have the opportunity to take Advanced Math and Algebra. Belleville High School offers Advanced Placement classes in all core subjects. Upon completion of an Advanced Placement class, the student has the opportunity to take an Advanced Placement exam. A qualifying score entitles the student to college credit at many universities.

The Teachers of gifted students work closely with parents to assist them in understanding their child’s academic, social, and emotional development. They incorporate students’ passionate interests into daily lesson plans and provide flexible group activities for the entire class.

Van Buren teachers recognize and nurture the behaviors of gifted children. They create conditions in their classrooms where each of the students is challenged to learn. They participate in professional development programs concerning gifted education including brain research, instructional models, strategies, and materials and in turn apply that knowledge to their classroom instruction.

Eligibility

Eligibility for the Gifted Program is determined by test results and parent/teacher nomination. Below you will find links to the forms necessary to nominate your child. Evaluation of academic achievement, academic performance, creative thinking, and cognition/intelligence are used to determine whether a student would benefit from gifted classes and be successful in the Gifted Program. The student is also assessed through a multi-modal identification process, wherein no singular mechanism, criterion or cut-off score is used for determination of eligibility.

Eligible students will be given a cognitive abilities test. Those students who score in the upper ranges of the test will then be administered an individual achievement test. A selection committee composed of a principal, a central office administrator, a psychologist, a teacher, and the Gifted and Talented Coordinator will evaluate the test scores as well as the parent/teacher inventories to decide the best educational placement of the students.
