The Van Buren Public School District provides information and links to Be SMART, a framework for families designed to help parents and adults normalize conversations about gun safety and take responsible actions that can prevent child gun deaths and injuries.
SECURE all guns in your home and vehicle.
MODEL responsible behavior around guns.
ASK about the presence of unsecured guns in other homes.
RECOGNIZE the role of guns in suicide.
TELL your peers to BeSMART.
One of the District’s top priorities is to provide students and staff with a safe educational environment, which includes an environment free from gun violence. Your proactive efforts in securing firearms and ammunition are vital to keep children safe.
An Amendment to the state Firearms Act, effective February 2024, makes it a crime to improperly store or leave a firearm unattended in the home when someone knows or reasonably should know a minor is, or is likely to be, on the premises. Any unattended firearms must be unloaded and locked with a locking device or stored in a locked box or container.
Each of our schools has a limited amount of firearm locks available in the office to help our families comply with the law and to keep our students safe. For more information, please contact your building’s main office, or the Director of School and Safety, Dan Wright. We invite you to take advantage of this opportunity to enhance firearm safety measures at home.
